Sunday Happy

The world. I could talk about it but I don’t even know what to say. There are all sorts of feelings that come and go but what I feel most is sad for all the people. It is all very overwhelming and yeah. I don’t know, the world is a fucked up place and there are some seriously fucked up people in it. That is where I am at.

Other then the week having a shadow of doom and gloom, it had some good stuff. The mr and I went for an icy walk with So and Megan. It was actually more like a ice skate due to the trails being completely covered in ice which was fine by us cause we just bush whacked our way around. Then it go hot, like close to 60 degrees and all the snow melted (not all the ice though). It was crazy because you get so used to the cold and that first day of warm weather feels so luscious. Don’t get me wrong, I love me all the snow and cold, but it was super nice to have the front door open for the morning and to go for a run without having to cover my face and hands. But then it snowed again, a nice hefty snow and we went right back to winter. The upland downs of Vermont weather. Got to love it. Besides all that I also spent some time with clay, went through paperwork, did some other not fun stuff, and made bagels. Then we had Megan, So, Judah and Coco come over for said bagels and an afternoon of sledding and outdoor shenanigans . It was all sorts of fantastic

Sunday again. (It never ceases to amaze me how fast week can fly by). Today the mr and I have snowshoe in the woods plans for a few hours this morning then after tuckering myself out I have library plans followed by sitting on my ass and reading plans while drinking many cups of hot coffee and or tea for the rest of the day. Just about a perfect day if I do say so myself.

Some of the lighter internet that I looked at from the week.

-Real estate and all the jazz about moving is all sorts of nuts right now. What happens when Americans stay in the same house forever?

-And then there is this. Americans are fleeing to places where political views match their own. AReyou seeing this happening where you live? Living in VT this has been happening for quite a while.

-I have thought about how to fly with camping stuff a lot. An experienced backpacker’s guide for flying with camping gear

-Nordic by Design: 16 Ideas to Steal from Iceland (and Icelandic Turf Houses). I mean how freaking adorable are these!

-Give me all the dark black coffee but also sometimes a little spice too. You Should Add Spices to Your Coffee Grounds

-BEST OF: SPRINGTIME GREEN.Yes. And there a few couches in these pictures that I am obsessed with.

-In Praise of Crayons at Restaurants — for Adults. I don’t understand why people associate crayon with children. Crayons are for EVERYONE! If I went to resurnats (I haven’t eaten out Lin like 10 years) I would want crayons.

-Have you heard about the giant bear in California that is hanging out n Tahoe? Well they got the wrong guy. Hank the Tank Is Innocent!

-Growing up all I wanted to be was a cartoonist. Very Funny Ladies' sketches out the history of women cartoonists at 'The New Yorker'

Pictures form the week.

Sunday Happy

February 20, 2022 Colleen Stem

It is the last week of February and I am trying to let that sink in. How is it possible that we are this far into the year already? It makes me feel like I am falling behind in life, like I should have a lot more figured out by now. Yikes! And then I think I realized I need to start thinking about the garden. That got me excited!

This past week I have definitely felt like a bear that is suppose to be hibernating. Sure I have done the things that I needed to like work a bit, pick up food from the farm, go for morning runs. Monday the mr and I did have a nice Valentines day, but other then that, I have had zero energy and actually felt and still feel like I could give two fucks about anything. All I really want to do is hide in a pile of blankets and books and nod off all day. The thing is if I actually were to do that I would loose my freaking mind. I don’t do well with longs pouts of unproductiveness. It makes me feel wrong. So basically I have been doing things but dragging ass all week and really don’t have much more to say about that.

Now were are back to Sunday. What to do, what to do. I am hoping to go for a little hike in the woods now that the trails are not completely iced over (the little snow we got helped with that). And I need to go get groceries so I will probably do that. And the studio. I might bop in for a hot minute to glaze a few pieces.. I don’t know. Maybe today will be the day where I actually say screw it and do spend the day in hiding. But probably not. I really do need to go to the grocery store. I’m dangerously low on carrots.

Some stuff on the internet that I read this week.

-The surprising benefits of eating together. I don’t remember much as a kid but I do remember the times we ate together. Still to this day the mr and I eat dinner together every single day.

-A kind of how it is made. How Good Design Promotes Good Health.

-People are waaaay to quick to toss food that they “think” is bad. Are Those Weird Sprouts On Your Potatoes Safe to Eat?

-An Arizona priest used one wrong word in baptisms for decades. They're all invalid. Well that is some shit and it actually pissed me off a little when I read about it. Organized religion and all the ceremonial stuff is whatever, you do you, but to invalidate peoples baptisms because of a single word? That seems kinda of ridiculous, but that is me.

-What’s the Difference Between Cacao and Cocoa? know this when you buy that chocolate for the cookies.

-A 5-Year-Old Called the Design Shots on Her All-Yellow London Bedroom. I love this room. And the reading nook. I need a reading nook.

--Fortune Cookies Come With Almost Every Chinese Delivery Order in America. Here’s Why.

-I need to get out of here soon. The travel itch is intense. I am thinking Norway. Where Can Americans Travel Right Now? A Country-by-country Guide

And a few pictures from the week.

How are you handling the winter so far? Are you freezing you ass off? Are you spending all of your time inside? Me, I freakin love it!!!! Sure -20 is a bit rough on the eyeballs and there is a need for an extra layer or two but I really truly feel that winter is season of my soul. I want to spend all of my time outside. The world is calm and quiet and no one else around. It just feels bigger and more full and I could live the season forever. But yeah, it has been damn cold this week. Multiple frozen face mornings for sure.

The week was nothing special. Well the snow we got was fantastic. I wasn’t feeling the greatest (not sick, just blah) but I also found out that someone I worked with last week had covid so I was a little edgy and basically went outside for runs and walks but stayed away from people until I went and got tested. Got the results back and no covid, yay!(Although when I got the email and it said negative the first thought was, Oh shit, negative means I have it! That thought lasted about a minute before I woke up. Ha!) So it was a low key week. I shoveled a lot, Barb come over for dinner, I picked up farm share, painted some mugs, threw a few big ass bowls, stuck my wheel on cinderblocks (FINALLY), and went outside I much as I could without getting frost bite. The mr has been home a lot so we are still doing our afternoon reading hour thing. He has gotten a little better at not talking. But he still does. And that’s about it.

Today, well it is going to feel down right balmy with temperatures in like the high teens so you bet I am dragging the mr out. I have a few hikes in mind but I haven’t decided on where we should go. I want to get out of town but don’t want to drive to far (car air dries me right out.) We might also go look at some ice sculptures, maybe pick up a cup of coffee, walk around like tourist. We will see how much outdoor activity I can pack in before the mr calls uncle.

And we made it through another week. Good on us!

The past week was alright. Nothing to exciting other then the mr getting his stitches out the other day. I can’t think of much else that went on. Oh Barb came over for dinner one night and I stuffed her full of beans and heard all about it. HA! And you know how I said last week I was getting rid of the tree? Well I did but it took me until Friday to actually get myself to let it go. (I was one of those people. And I think if it wasn’t dead I would have kept it up longer.) I also spent time doing clay stuff, going though a pile of paperwork (how the fuck is it tax season again?) and frost burnt my legs and face with all the subzero running. (I was going out in -25 degrees. I am stupid) It has been cold. Like really freaking cold. And cold I am good with but man we need a snow storm. I would really like a good foot or two of big fluffy snow please and thank you.

And back to Sunday. It is still super cold so I know I am not going to be able to convince the mr to do anything involving outdoor activity (I am fine with that, I will just run in the woods like usual) so I am not sure what we will do. Maybe after my run I will do the grocery shopping and then just spend the afternoon reading and drinking all the coffee on the couch. He did suggest that we instate a daily reading time together (I am so down with this) but the only problem with it is that when we sit down to read, he starts to talk. I don’t know about you but I can’t read and talk at the same time and there in lies the problem.

Oh and one more thing. I am trying to make room for new stuff so all the pottery I have left on the site, stem+node, is on sale, like $10-$20 off. Do me a favor and give it a new home!

Internet from the week.

Happy New Year! How’s it going so far? Ours has already been a shit show so expectations for the next 364 more days are low at the moment but if they are low then all the highs will be good right?

The past week was and we did it. Usually the week between the holidays is a little more slow and gentle but this year it didn’t offer as much reprieve from the chaos of life as usual. Day after Christmas we went to Megans and hung out with Anthony cause it was his birthday (Happy Birthday Anthony!) while still trying to figure out what the hell happened on Christmas. HA! Then once the offices we back open we had a day of aggravating phone calls with doctors and insurance people and I probably don’t need to tell you that it was the most frustrating day of calls ever. Another day was spent at the doctors where we were told the exact same thing that the doctors at the ER told us, but the mr got a new cast and they scheduled his surgery so not completely pointless?. (The mr is losing his shit with the cast and fun with that has just barely begun!) By mid week we were burnt out so we have been going out everyday looking for woods close by to walk in and be less. Then the end of the week came and we hung with Judah on his birthday (Happy Birthday Judah!) The mr spent 2 days making a one handed pop up card for him and then took him, the girl, and his friend to the movies while Coco and I walked around the neighborhood looking for discarded curb Christmas trees. Then they came home, Judah got a bearded dragon, Barb twisted up Coco’s slinky, and everyone ate cake.

New Years Eve was whatever. A holiday that sounds fun but when it comes down to it, I am not one to spend a late night doing anything. The mr and I went for a little hike and basically laid low. I did a little new year window washing, read some, started to clean my studio, and then was in bed by 730.

Woke up to this new year with a note on the mr’s truck. Someone smashed into it while we were sleeping. At least they left a note! But what was really fucked up was the phone call from the police asking to be let into one our apartments (the loft) because they needed to retrieve one of the bullets that was shot off and hit the house that morning. That was at 6am. So the mr ran on over and dealt with that. And then had to fix a leaky faucet with one hand.

Smashed cars, gun shots, and leaks… Happy New Year indeed.

Back to Sunday. Not much planned other then spending a few hours at the studio, glazing some mugs, but mostly doing a couple hours of cleaning. After that I am coming home to finish cleaning my studio, do the laundry, make some soup. Hopefully I will have some time to sit around on my butt and read. I got a stack off books calling my name and I really need to get out of my head.

Internet from the week.

-What’s the most eco-friendly way to dispose of your Christmas tree? We usually just chop it up and compost it. There is a goat farm down the road that takes them and I think I might do that this year.

-How to Delete Your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok. I am sure there are a lot of people that are thinking about this. Or if not thinking about it, should be.

-Misery loves company and that is the truth. The Cost of Engaging With the Miserable

-Take These 7 Fire Tower Hikes In Vermont For The Most Rewarding Views. We have been to half of these (I have climbed them, the mr refuses) Always amazing views.

-Remembering the smart, sharp, naughty Betty White. This lady, what a freaking badass. And to go out, at 99, on New Years eve no less. Thats the way to do it.

-I didn't know this was. thing, did you? Inside the Starbucks Collectors Cup Market, Where a Single Tumbler Can Sell for Nearly $2K

-Three ways to be more rational this year. But do I need to be more rational?

-I would most certainly live in this tree house.

-Trend Alert: Hand-Painted Details All Over. I am into this. Way cheaper then wall paper and easier to get on and off.
