Sunday Happy

November 29, 2020 Colleen Stem

What a week. Not going to lie, hasn't been my most favorite week for sure. I have been in a mood, a not a good one.

Not much happened out of the usual. We got a nice snow at the very beginning of the week but then it all melted and I think that was when I started to feel blah. The mr and I did a nice hike in that snow though and it was really freaking great. I did a bit work in my studio, cleaned the inside of my oven, (I must note here that it took my 15 minutes tops. No meat means no grease) put up some Christmas decorations (helped lift the mood a bit) and walked around a lot. We didn't have a normal Thanksgivings, no big family gathering at our house, no sibling fighting, no dance party so there was little to have tp plan or do. It was a little sad but very much necessary. And honestly miss everyone but it was kind of nice not to have ta clean turkey gravy or mashed potatoes off my couch.

Thanksgiving day I went for a little hike with Megan, Justin, and kids and then the mr and I just went to my moms. I helped cook, the mr and Barb did some deep cleaning around the house and the boys came out of there rooms long enough to eat. (Paul helped clean before he crawled back into he dark hole) And that was that.

And all through everything I have been cranky Maybe it is pandemic fatigue, maybe it is that it is so freaking warm out and I just want it to be cold and snowy, or maybe it is that I have opened and started 3 different books this week and none of them are sticking. I feel bookless and lost. If I can’t get into a book soon I am going to freak out! It’s probably all of the above and then some but I am okay with being not great. Just going to lean into it, feel my feelings and so on and so forth. (I sound so healthy and smart. HA!)

I am hoping today brings some shift in my demeanor. The mr and I are going to go get our Christmas tree!!! We are going a week earlier then usually but whatever, I want it and need some happy. So as per tradition, we are heading out into the Green Mountain National Forest to hike in, find our tree, cut it down, and drag it out. This my friends it the most bestest part of Christmas. A real live tree, covered in light, right in my living room.

Alright, feeling better already.

Can you even believe it’s the week of Thanksgiving? Like really, it is. I know right? And yeah, it might be a little more low key and quiet and maybe even non existent this year, but hey, if missing a big family gathering (we are skipping our big family thanksgiving) will keep more people from getting sick, well then I say that is oh so fine by me. We will just float the holiday until we can all safely be together. Thanksgiving in April. Maybe we will make it a new yearly thing. Here’s to new traditions!

Another week past and not a whole heck of a lot happened of interest. The mr and I have been busy with lots of little things that need to be done around the house and the other houses and life. I have been trying to get a good chunk of glazing done so I have stuff stocked for selling and the mr has been riding around town with the scooter (the truck in in the shop) fixing things and doing whatever he does when he doesn't have a big project going on, all the while staying away from all the people, like way away. I did go for a walk with Megan and So in the woods and the mr, Barb, and I also took the littles for a nice walk because outdoors in fine and we need to hang with the littles, but other then that, no peoples. Oh, and we (fyi, Barb is basically always part of “we”. She basically lives with us now) took Gigi to the vets to get spayed. Another to do checked off the list.

And it snowed a little and it made me happy. I also picked up farm share and got 2 gigantic stocks of Brussels sprouts which is always a good thing, and I repotted a bunch of house plants that need replanting.

Wow, when I read that back to myself….. 😬

Sunday again. Happens every week. The mr and I are taking a drive to go walk some property that I am probably way to optimistic about, but damn, we need to get land before everyone buys it all up! This chunk looks oh so pretty and nice and hard to get to and has all the trees. At the very least, we are going to walk around in the woods for a little while so there’s that. And as far as for when I get home and have the rest of the afternoon to do whatever, welp I think it is time to bust out the Christmas decorations! It’s happening. I am excited!

What a week, what a week. I think we can all say that.

I think we all know the big news by now. Biden and Kamala WON!!!! A new President and the very first female Vice President! Thank the fucking universe! And can I just say, female and president, those words sound so right together, right!

After hearing the news the feeling of relief was so extreme… like a big stupid red face beast was beaten off my back. OR like when you are sick and barf but then feel better after. Yeah, like that. And now I am going to hide in a hole for a little while because I got so completely overstimulated what with my own shit and all the emotions and opinions of others that I can barely think straight. I am ready for a good long break from it all and will come back to in a few weeks when the garbage get cleared away. We know there is going to e a hissy fit shit show to be had and I just don’t want to give it any more of my attention to it. 4 years was 4 years too much.

So that was some fantastic news. But on the downside, which is really a down, is that my bike got stolen Yup. Wednesday morning I biked to my normal spot by the woods for my morning run, went on run, and came out of woods to no bike. Someone (or someones.. an older man saw 2 mother fuckers.) grabbed my bike. I was shocked. And crushed, And so fucking mad. Walked around and drove around to see if I could find the fucks but no luck. Cops were nice but I know that is not happening and now I am rolling around on my old, very broken, frame that doesn't really fit me , brakes that barely work, and kind of actually hurts to rid, bike. MAHH! I am just still so pissed but oh well, nothing more I can do.

But there was some highlights from the week as well. It SNOWED and we had a really cold snap. For about 3 days we had a nice little covering of the white stuff. I was wearing hats and mittens and winter gear, and I felt more calm and centered then I have all year. But then it melted and got hot and it basically summer again, which was nice for a minutes when the mr and I cleaned the shit out the yard and garden, but I am fully and completely over it and really just want it to be cold and snowy again. I also picked up the first of my winter farm share and got a huge stock of Brussel sprouts, did a bunch of glaze work at the studio, spent some good time with Barb, got my winter tires on (I have the best bro in law. Thanks Justin!) and harvested all my dead flowers to keep for seeds.

But my bike.

So today. The mr and are heading out of town for a nice long out of town adventure. Hike and woods and peace and quiet. Keeping it simple like.

Internet stuff that came from the internet.

-Winning Was the Easy Part. And now is when the hard wok begins. And there is sooo much that needs to be fixed but I believe we can do it.

-Is It Better to Plant Trees or Let Forests Regrow Naturally?. Stop cutting down trees AND plant more.

-I have had my travel mug for 16ish years now (the mr bought it for me as a present) and use it at least once a day. But the rim is bent and the lid barely stays on and I have been thinking it might be time for a new one, maybe. But I like this one.

Sunday Happy

October 25, 2020 Colleen Stem

It’s the last week of October folks. And this time next week it will be one hour earlier then it is now. I am already playing that game in my head with myself saying it is this time but will be that time. Getting mentally ready. And I know most people hate it, hate that it going to get dark out at like 430 but me, I am excited. I like having more sunlight earlier when I am awake and as for darker earlier, it just makes our after dinner walks that much more interesting. You can see inside peoples houses in the dark so much better.😳(Don’t pretend you don’t look too.)

The week began at Gifford Woods. After getting checked in and switching our campsite 3 times (for optimal light and a good chopping block )the mr and I hiked a long hike, he did some fishing (and actually caught one), I read, we made fire, we ate soup. All the good stuff. Then we went to bed with the knowledge that there was a bear roaming about. We woke up with no bear sittings (sad but probably good) and headed on back to town.

And it was Barbs 21 st birthday. So we had dinner with her and the boys at my moms, sang her songs, gave her shit, did the cake thing, and sent her on her way to go be 21.

After that it was back to it. Basically all the same stuff with some of this and that and a new, very expensive heater replacement at one of the apartments. (OUFF!) Then Barb came over for her second birthday dinner with the littles. Pie instead of cake, Coco shaking his booty, Miley harassing the mr about when he is gong to dye her hair, and Judah, well he was just being cool like a cool kid.

And that is pretty much it.

It’s Sunday and this is it, the last camping of the year. I would be lying if I said that I am not sad, but it’s ok, I don’t think I could handle the mr camping in the winter, he does not like to be cold. And honestly, we spend just as much time running around in the woods in the winter, we just come back to our warm bed at night so it’s not like we don’t still run away all the time. Anyway, heading out early, going to soak it in as much of the day away as possible, do a good hike, the mr is gonna fish, I’ll read and look at rocks by the river, and we will eat hot soup by the fire. Maybe as a last hurrah we will see a moose or a bear. I have no real control over that but wouldn’t that be awesome?

Oh and before I forget, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!

Sunday Happy

October 18, 2020 Colleen Stem

Just the other night the mr and I were having the conversations about doing the heater checks in all the apartments, what the plans are going to be for the holidays, and all the end of the year things that need to be done before, well the end of the year. It was a weird conversation because were did the year even go? 2020 flying on by through a shit storm and we are not slowing down.

Another great week that began with more fantastic hiking and camping. We were at one of my favorite places, Groton Forest, ans lucky not a whole heck of a lot of people were there. Our hikes were beyond gorgeous, the air was cool, it was quiet and calm, and the sky was clear. Just a solid A+ camp.

Then we slept, woke up, broke down camp and came home. Every week we come home is hard. The mr and I could live in the woods forever! Life goals.

The rest of the week went as usual. The mr off doing all the work he always is doing plus talking to plumbers, plaining wood with Judah, selling (and sold) Barbs car, and was getting in as much fall scootering as he could before the thing needs to be stored away for winter. Me, same same. Studio stuff. Did some glazing, made more things, trying to get super ready for the holiday season and have a good stock of stuff to sell.

Not much really in the way fo eventfulness maybe besides me and Miley made a cake for shits and giggles then had dinner with Barb. Or that the mr and I filled out our ballets and I went and dropped them off at city hall. We also took the boys for a bike/walk. I picked up my second to last farm share for the summer (winter share starts in November) Oh, and I broke my freaking favorite eating fork. I have been eaten almost all my meals with this fork for like 10 years and it was truly a fantastic fork, perfect weight, perfect angle, perfect sharp tines. So that shook me. But I’ll be ok.

Today the mr and I are heading out for our second to last camp. Already sad about it but I am trying to not think about it too much. I want to just enjoy all the trees ans colors and go for a good hike and sit by a nice fire and go to sleep on the ground. All the good things.
