Sunday Happy

June 19, 2022 Colleen Stem

Can you believe that we are half way through the year already? It is giving me a little anxiety, like I am having a mid year crisis. All I can think of is like ‘what the hell did I do thins year?’ And I know I have done a lot but still, its that feeling of time gone by and things that I should of or wished I have done already. Oh well can’t do anything about it now. HA!

We had a pretty good and fun week. We did some stuff besides the stuff of life matinence. The mr and I took the kayaks out and paddled/blew around on a big pond for a afternoon. We went for a walk that turn into a 10 mile walk ( I got stung on the foot on that walk), I picked up like 8 ponds of greens from farm share (no joke) and now all I eat is lettuce, and we took the littles strawberry picking on the coldest summer day on record. At the farm in the play area the mr found the mini excavator in the sandbox and I think he had more fun playing with that then anything else we did this week.

Sunday. Today the mr and I are both doing work. He has a project that he needs to finish up and I have a shit ton of stuff to glaze before the markets. But it’s all good because we are going to take the first half of tomorrow off and go do something fun together. Plus we are gearing up for camping soon so once we start, its on. No more Sunday work!

Sunday Happy

I don’t know where you live but here in VT it looks like it is snowing out. The cotton wood fluff is heavy and is actually really lovely until you get a mouth full. But hey, what am I gonna do, keep my mouth shut? Yeah no, probably not.

The past week was not to shabby. I feel like I got a lot of stuff done even though I am still a hobbling around a bit cause my knee is still all sorts of fucked up. I am dealing with it enough and I figured if it is still screwy next week I might just call one of those doctors and go from there. Anyway…😬

Biggest highlight of the week was I picked up our first famr share of the summer! SOOOO many greens and I am soooo soooo happy about it. The weeks between the winter and summer shares are always the worst. I pretty much end up eating whatever veggies I can scrounge up in the freezer and supplementing with the most expensive, sub par produce from the grocery store. It’s not a good month food wise but the stuggle is over. Yay! And as for my garden at home, it is looking pretty stinking good if I do sat so myself. So far the new neighborhood woodchuck has not managed to sneak his fat ass though the fence so yeah, I am feeling hopeful.

And it was the last week of school for the littles! I had everyone come over for a pizza and ice cream sundae party to celebrate. Almost the whole fam came and did the usual running through my house (with shoes on like beasts), eating as much pizza as possible, rolling down hills at the park, and harassing the mr. about gerbil cages. The sundaes were made without incident and the adult people bitched and moaned about all of our aches and pains. Good stuff. Ha!

Sunday here and I am ready to go. The mr and I are busting out the kayaks for the first time this year! I am exited to get out on the quiet waters for a bit. And that is the plan for the day, well that and I am going to spend the rest of the day with an ice pack on my knee, a cup of hot coffee (then tea, then more coffee) and a book in my face. Kayaking and reading… should be good.

Is anyone else wondering how it is possible that it’s June already? I never see it coming… HA!

I had a week of a week. You know, like when you do things and then they are done and time moves forward. That makes sense right?

So yeah, was fine. I got a lot of stuff done, sold more pots,(that now need to be shipped…blah), played in the garden, walked through the woods and down by the lake, and enjoyed all the fine fine weather we have been having. It hasn't gotten unbearably hot yet so I am still a human!

One thing that has sucked all week is that my knee filled up with fluid which happens to me from time to time but usually gos away in a day or two. Well I guess because I am old now (or I haven’t really stayed off my feet and I still have been running) it hasn’t gone away and it is really fucking swollen and annoying. So I have been hobbling around and icing and heating the fucker as much as I can all week. It is still really swollen so maaaybe I might call a doctor if it doesn’t get better soon.

Sunday. Whoop whoop! The mr and I are heading out of town for a while, into the middle of nowhere to check out some land situations. I am very excited to finally get out of here, walk around some woods, and maybe fine that piece of something that we have been looking for. And for road coffee because well coffee in general. And maybe today will be the day my stupid knee will feel better too! Is that hoping for to much?

Sunday Happy

May 15, 2022 Colleen Stem

I am hot and it is only the middle of May. I shouldn’t be this freakin hot. I hope this weather is not a preview of things to come this summer cause if it is then I am in trouble. And probably anyone that comes near me.

The week. It was meh, whatever. I feel like I am falling behind on everything in life so I have been little cranky and annoyed. I can blame some of it on the sudden summer weather but also I think I always feel this way around this time of year. June is a super busy month for us (apartment turn overs and the such) so getting as much shit done now helps the transitions go smoothly and we can never get enough done fast enough. This year nit exception, more so it has been kind of rough start already. The mr smashed out the back windshield of his truck with a 2x4 basically right after he blew out one of his tires. He also had stupid work stuff happen and so he has been stressed and a crank ass all week too. Oh and I got stung on my ass by a yellow jacket because why not?

It wasn't all a wash though. The littles and Barb came over for food and park play. I worked on pots (in my cool basement) and picked up my last winter farm share of the year. (3-4 weeks until summer share starts and I am already rationing out what I have left which is basically beets and onions.) And I went for a small bike ride, worked in the garden some, picked some lilacs. Little good things you know.

It’s Sunday and today the mr and I have plans for a good hike. The temperature should not be stupid and it might even rain so it will be great. And I need it. I need to get out of town (although not to far… gas is DUMB expensive) and hide away in the newly greened up trees. I might hate the heat but I am loving the colors and smell of fresh life. And with what ever time I have left this afternoon I am going to spend it in the garden. I already have a few of the beds planted and am ready to just stick everything in the ground. My tomato plants have been living outside for the past week and are thriving so if they are good, well it is time.

Just Freeze the Tomatoes

September 11, 2021 Colleen Stem
IMG_4170.jpg

Do you have a shit ton of tomatoes? Do you not have the capacity in you body to eat them all fresh or the will or desire or time to can them but really want to save some tomatoes for later? Well you know you can just freeze them right?

Yup. You don’t have to do anything fancy, pretty much anything at all. Just wash, remove any green stuff, then pop the whole tomatoes (any variety, large or small and tomatillos for that matter. Just remove the papery skin.) into a freezer bag or airtight freezer container and stick in the freezer. That is it.

Then all winter long (or until you run out) you will have peak summer tomatoes right there ready to be dropped into soup, roasted into deliciousness , simmered into a thick and luscious sauce, or do whatever the heck you usually do with tomatoes besides eating them fresh. I mean, you can even eat them frozen too. Not a bad little snack if I do say so myself.

Happy tomato-ing!
